Early Broadway Shows

The early era of musical theatre was heavily influenced by jazz music. 1920s - 1940s: Berlin, Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers & Hart.

In most audition situations, using a song from a musical film from this era would also be acceptable, since most composers of this time period wrote for both stage and film. Film musicals from this time period are an excellent source of underused audition songs.

Rodgers & Hammerstein's shows, although introduced in the 1940s, do not reflect the style of the early era. Similarly, Irving Berlin's later works (1945 and later) are also not suitable.
