Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes.

1933, during the depression, New York & Philadelphia. 42nd Street is the address of the theatre. The new show is 'Pretty Lady'. This is the familiar story of a chorus girl who must take over as the star of the show on short notice when the lead performer is injured.

Peggy, 'the novice', has 'exactly thirty-six hours to learn twenty-five pages, six songs, and ten dance numbers'. By the next evening, Julian will have either 'a live leading lady or a dead chorus girl'. "...Sawyer, you're going out there a youngster but you've got to come back a star!"

Audition Suggestions for 42nd Street

There is a lot of tap dancing in this show. Almost every performer, including the chorus, in 42nd Street must be able to tap dance well.

Billy Lawlor (Tenor)
leading man of the theatre's new show, "Pretty Lady"
Peggy Sawyer (Soprano, tap dance)
young, scared chorus girl - naive, sincere, humble
Julian March (Baritone)
a tough, frazzled, tyrannical director - Jerry Orbach type
Dorothy Brock (Alto, 40s)
tempermental, glamourous leading lady who is "getting too old". Stereotypical prima donna who softens over time.
Abner Dillon
Dorothy's fussy "sugar daddy" and producer of "Pretty Lady"
Pat Denning (Baritone)
Dorothy's old flame and former vaudeville partner. Likes to stir up trouble.
Andy Lee
Choreographer
Bert Berry (Tenor)
& Maggie Jones (Alto)
The writers of "Pretty Lady"
Annie, Lorraine, Phyllis
chorus girls
Medium - Large chorus depending on size of stage
