Plot Summary & Audition Notes

List of Characters in Anne & Gilbert

Anne & Gilbert is a sequel-of-sorts to the first Anne of Green Gables musical. It is based on the second and third novels in the series.

This show is much more sophisticated and true to the novels than the first Anne musical. It is witty and fast-paced. Some of the smaller roles that occur only in act 1 or act 2 may be doubled.

Audition Preparation Suggestions for Anne & Gilbert

The music requires legit singers who can communicate lyrics well, as most of the songs in this show are providing important plot development. If auditioning with a monologue, choose something that shows a little humour.

Anne Shirley (Soprano, early 20s)
A young woman full of dreams. Despite her intelligence, she often does not see what is best for her, even when it is right under her nose.
Gilbert Blythe (Tenor, mid-late 20s)
A handsome, earnest, smart young man who is hardworking almost to a fault. Dreams of becoming a doctor.
Diana Barry (Mezzo/Soprano, early 20s)
Anne's loveable and loyal best friend. Bubbly, but also bright, she sees through Anne's stubborness.

Marilla Cuthbert (Alto/Mezzo, 50s - 60s)
A spinster who adopted Anne. A stern, hardworking woman who loves Anne dearly.
Rachel Lynde (Mezzo, comic role, 50s - 60s)
Marilla's loyal best friend. Opinionated and stubborn, she has the annoying habit of being right most of the time.
Josie Pye (Mezzo, late teens)
She has tried unsuccessfully to turn Gilbert's head for years. Flirtatious and brazen, with a sharp tongue, but underneath it all a good heart.

Phillipa Gordon (Mezzo/Soprano, comic role, early 20s)
a flirtatious, spoiled but good-natured college student
Moodie Spurgeon McPherson (comic role)
old school chum of Gilbert & Anne's, future minister and fiddle player
Chorus of Characters:
Rev. Sloan, Mrs. Pye, schoolgirls, Redmond students
