- The Color Purple (2005 Original Broadway Cast)
The Color Purple (The Novel) by Alice Walker
The Color Purple Sheet Music (Vocal Selections) |
Based on the novel by Alice Walker.
The story begins with a young Celie draped over her mother's coffin. Celie grows up but her life continues to go downhill, and the focus moves to her hard life with her husband Mister. The story hits a real emotional low when Mister kicks out Celie's sister, Nettie, and forbids Celie from having any contact with her. Mister's son, Harpo, marries a young woman named Sofia, who is strong, sassy, and fearless - everything Celie wishes she could be. Of course, Sofia's spunk gets her into trouble with the white folk in town, and her spirit is temporarily crushed by a hateful society. Shug Avery, Mister's onetime lover, also arrives on the scene - another liberated woman, though not without her own faults. She spends much of her time self-absorbed and running through lovers like water. However, it is Shug's influence that dramatically changes Celie's life, for the better. Nettie, who has become a missionary in Africa has tried to make contact with Celie but Mister has hidden every letter that she wrote. Celie discovers this stash and is eventually able to discover her own individual strength.
The music is a mixture of jazz, gospel, R&B, and African. There are many inticate harmonies. Most of the characters are African-American. |
