Based on Green Grow The Lilacs by Lynn Rigg.

Oklahoma was an important milestone in the history of musicals for a few reasons. Most importantly, it was one of the first musicals to use music to not only comment on the plot but also add to its development. Secondly, the sensational choreography by Agnes DeMille was ALSO used to further the plot, making it the first true triple-threat musical.

Oklahoma was the first collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein, paving the way for a string of very important musicals, making them one of the most famous musical theatre creation teams in history.

Audition Preparation Suggestions for
Oklahoma!

Oklahoma has many production numbers, and most characters should have dance experience. In addition, there is a ballet dream sequence that requires experienced ballet dancers. Some productions use a dancer replacement for Laurie.

When preparing for an audition for this show, be aware that Hammerstein uses regional dialogue. Yer for your, whur for where, and shore for sure. Reading the script ahead of time will allow you to be familiar with this so that you won't stumble over the words when asked to read a scene.

Curly McLain (Baritone, 25 - 35)
An upstanding cowboy.
Laurey Williams (Soprano, 18 - 25)
A typical "farmer's daughter". Very independant.
Jud Fry (35 - 45)
A creepy, mentally unbalanced farmhand who collects "picture postcards". Attracted to Laurey, but she'll have nothing to do with him.
Aunt Eller Murphy (45 - 65)
Laurey's protective guardian.
Ali Hakim
A traveling, womanizing peddler.
Ado Annie Carnes (Mezzo, 25 - 35)
A slightly promiscuous, but well-meaning girl.
Will Parker (Tenor, dance)
Loves Ado Annie.
This show also requires ballet dancers to act as Laurie, Curly and Jud in the dream sequence.
